Gerhard Furrer was awarded the title of professor in 2003. His research and teaching activities are related to terrestrial and aquatic environmental geochemistry.

- Diploma in Chemistry, University of Fribourg (1978); - PhD at EAWAG and ETH Zurich, adv. Werner Stumm (1985); - Postdoc at OSU, Corvallis, adv. John C. Westall (1986); - University of Bern, Inorganic Chemistry Group, head Paul W. Schindler (1987 - 1991); - Since 1991: ETH Zurich, Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, Soil Protection Group, head Rainer Schulin; - Sabbatical at UC Davis in the lab of William H. Casey (Spring 2001); - Since July 2006: Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics (IBP).

Research interests
- Chemical weathering of minerals; - Acidification of soil and waters; - Modelling of biogeochemical processes in terrestrial and aquatic environments; - Aqueous chemistry of aluminum; - Soil pollution by heavy metals; - Gentle methods of soil remediation; - Polynuclear aluminum complexes in nature and technical applications; - Genesis of new minerals in soil polluted by heavy metals.
