Research Field

Reto Knutti's research focuses on changes in the global climate system caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide. He uses numerical models of different complexity, from simple energy balance to three-dimensional coupled climate models simulating the atmosphere, ocean, land, sea ice and their interactions.

He further develops methods to constrain important feedback processes in the climate system by comparing observations with model results.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Reto Knutti is Full Professor in Climate Physics at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science, in the Department of Environmental Systems Science.

He was born in Saanen in 1973.

He studied physics at the University of Bern, where he earned his PhD in the department of Climate and Environmental Physics in 2002 and subsequently worked there as a postdoctoral researcher.

From 2004 to 2007 Reto Knutti worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.

2007 he was appointed Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich’s Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science.

Additional Information

He has frequently published papers in reputed scientific journals, particularly addressing the uncertainties of climate predictions for different economic and social scenarios.

Reto Knutti is a member of the "Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change" (IPCC). With advisory activities and  reports, this institution provides the scientific basis for international agreements on preventing and mitigating climate change. Reto Knutti has been a coordinating lead author of the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2013.
