Research Interests

  • Biosphere–Atmosphere Exchange Processes: Greenhouse gas fluxes of CO2, CH4, N2O; trace gas fluxes of O3, NO2, NO, CO, NH3; fluxes of stabile isotopes (13C/12C; 18O/16O; 2H/1H); experimental flux measurements with the eddy covariance technique and other micrometeorological approaches; special interest in the role of respiration, namely winter respiration, on ecosystem carbon budgets

  • Fog and Cloud Forests: Flux of liquid water to vegetation canopies and the associated flux of dissolved inorganic (anions and cations, namely nitrogen and sulfur containing species: NO3^2–, NH4+, SO4^2–, but also micronutrients); experimental flux measurements with the eddy covariance technique and active strand cloudwater collectors; special interest in how cloud forests depend on fog—is fog a stress factor or not?

  • Land Use and its Feedbacks to Regional Climate: Special interest in feedback processes at the Earth’s surface that are controlled by vegetation, land cover, and land use practices; dynamic numerical modeling using limited-area regional climate models or numerical weather forecasting models

  • Geography of Rural and Agriculturally Managed Areas: Special interest in how landscape patterns and land management practices depend on each other, how socio-economic changes influence this interplay, and how this affects biosphere–atmosphere exchange processes and budgets

  • Mountain Regions and the Arctic: Energy and greenhouse gas budgets, mountain meteorology, and geography of peripheral areas
