Curriculum Vitae (CV)

From 1996 to 2001, Arnaud Evrard studied civil Engineering and Architecture at UCLouvain, in Belgium, followed by a CAS on timber building techniques.

In 2002, he left in France for his first professional experience as project manager for “Construire en Chanvre”, the French association of Lime-Hemp builders. He gathered all existing laboratory experiments on Lime-Hemp materials and authored the first synthesis of Lime-Hemp properties.

He came back a year later in Belgium to start a PhD in Engineering Sciences at UCLouvain during which he studied the ability of Lime-Hemp mixtures to regulate heat and moisture transfer of indoor environment under transient climatic conditions. Hosted 6 months at the Fraunhofer-Institut for Building Physics in Germany, under the supervision of Dr. Ing. Hartwig Künzel, he could measure all significant hygrothermal parameters of such materials and became expert user of the software WUFI.

During the next decade, he continued to work in the research group Architecture et Climat at UCLouvain with Prof. André De Herde on bioclimatic architecture, inside insulation and hydrothermal properties of innovative materials as Lime-Hemp, straw bales and earth plasters, focusing on the combined effects on energy use and comfort feeling. His research and teaching domains evolved as he develop partnerships with industries – optimizing production processes, development of new building systems … – and with public entities – mapping of existing building stock in Brussels to define long-term strategies for retrofitting and new buildings considering environmental and socio-economic impacts as well as the heritage value.

In 2017, he decided to change radically his professional activity and moved to Vorarlberg (AT). He worked at Lehm Ton Erde with Martin Rauch until June 2022, mainly on the building sites – ramming earth walls and floors, but also working with lightweight earth mixtures, as well as earth plastering and various finishing (wax, casein, oil…). This handwork experience is a great value added to his scientific training.

In parallel, he is also involved since its creation in the ArchitekturWerkstatt (OST), the new Bachelor of Architecture in St.Gallen (CH), where he teaches the basics of hygrothermal Building Physics.

Since December 2020, he is a senior scientific at the Chair of Sustainable Construction of ETH Zürich in charge of the program coordination of the CAS Regenerative Materials.
