Curriculum Vitae (CV) | Hans-Rudolf Künsch was Professor of Mathematics at ETH Zurich from October 1983 until July 2014, and member of the Semar für Statistik, an institute of the mathematics department. Since August 2014 he is professor emeritus, continuing his interests in statistics and mathematics. A Swiss citizen, born on October 17, 1951, he studied mathematics at ETH Zurich. After one and a half year as research student at the University of Tokyo, he did his PhD from 1978-1980 at ETH Zurich under the supervision of Hans Föllmer. After a second stay in Japan, he was elected as assistant professor at ETH Zurich in October 1983. In 1989 he was promoted to associate and in 1992 to full professor. From 2007 to 2009 he was chair of the mathematics department. His research is concerned with the development and the investigation of statistical procedures to analyze time series and spatial data. In particular, he works on robust estimation, on bootstrap and other resampling methods to estimate the accuracy of an estimator, on the statistics of Markov random fields, on state space models and on Monte Carlo methods in statistics. He is involved in the application of statistical methods for modeling environmental systems, in particular in climate science. From 1998 until 2000 he was editor of the «Annals of Statistics», and from 2011-2014 president of the «Institute of Mathematical Statistics». He is a fellow of the «Institute for Mathematical Statistics», and an elected member of the «International Statistical Institute».
