Hilmar Ingensand

Hilmar Ingensand has been a Full professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) since 1993, holding the Chair of Geodetic Metrology at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry. He has been head of the Department of Geodetic Sciences from 1996 to 1998.

Born in 1947 in Siegen, Germany, he studied geodesy at the University of Bonn, followed by a three month stay in the USA, two years as a "Referendar" with a second State examination, and six years as a research and teaching assistant. He received a Ph.D. for his work on "Development of Electronic Inclinometers" at the Institute of Geodesy of the University of Bonn, where he developed several geodetic systems. After several years of activity as a development engineer at Leica Heerbrugg AG, Switzerland (formerly Wild Heerbrugg AG) he became head of the "Basic Research and Applications" group in 1989.

His main research activities at the ETH Zurich are geodetic metrology, sensortechnology and engineering geodesy. Since 1996 he has been the head of a research group aiming at the development of methods and instruments for refraction-free, high-precision direction determination. Furthermore, he is involved in several engineering projects in Switzerland and abroad.
